Ride the Waves of Today

A note to you: if today feels like a lot, or too much even, that’s because it is.

It’s an infinite world. And you may be trying to gather up an extra large portion of it onto your plate today. But the reality is that (a) what is on your plate today is what you choose (yes, you have responsibilities, but imagine what would happen to your plate if someone you love was in a car crash this morning), and (b) what is ā€œon your plateā€ is only a tiny sliver of all that is actually happening today.

Right now, stars unimaginably bigger than our entire earth are exploding and imploding. Countries are at war. People are dying, and being born.

It’s a full day every day. The real ups and downs have less to do with what’s actually happening and more to do with how we think and feel about it.

Back to your day. If today feels like a lot, one option is to edit your plate. Scale down to the essentials. This is definitely worthwhile. But it’s not the only option.

Another option is to ride the waves of today. Decide that whether today is ā€œa lotā€ or ā€œa little,ā€ you will simply be with what is, as it comes. That’s it.

And I’m going to go out on a limb to say something direct and opinionated, but totally true: you are 100% equipped for all this day has for you.

You don’t have to try so hard today. And you certainly don’t have to keep up. The waves will do the work; your job is only to ride them. And you will.

Today, you will be graceful and skilled at what you do, and the day—just like so many before—will come and go. And it will be great, or at the very least it will be what it is—regardless of whether you feel totally overwhelmed and worried, or you enjoy every single moment of it.

If today feels like a lot, enjoy it.

Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one. —Dr. Seuss
