Real Rest

Our culture and our families are worn to threads by fear and anxiety and exhaustion, from trying to control every aspect of our life. We’re all on empty. We all want to rest, but we're waiting until ______. We have to stop waiting for rest and start creating it. Rest is more important and more scarce than ever. I don’t mean sitting still. I mean real rest, where you’re still inside - ok with your circumstances, ok with who others are, ok with who you are. That’s not something that comes along situationally, ever. It’s something we have to create - it’s a discipline. Controlling our thoughts, learning to become quiet inside, learning not to worry, learning to be present, choosing to be ok, leading our internal dialogue. No one else can do this for us. They can give us toys or money or affirmation but they can never give us rest - that would be like giving someone fitness. It’s up to us to put in the time, like any other exercise. We owe it to ourselves, our family, our community, and to our culture to develop the discipline of rest - to accept rest, real rest, as our responsibility, not a result of favorable circumstances.
